The Fireman Essay, Part 10: Alarm Procedure

Once a fire is detected, the first thing that happens is that all of us firefighters must climb out of bed, even if we are tired. Then we get dressed, which entails putting on our fire-suits that are red with black trim, plus latching the buckles on our big black fire-boots, and donning our protective fire-helmets.

Now we dash to the exit pole that connects our top-floor dormitory to the ground floor below. We slide all the way down and take our positions on the fire-toboggan, which is our slang term for fire-van. I myself clutch the ladder at the back, and the dog named Firedog, who is our station’s mascot, crouches by my side while I feed him a bowl of goose flavored ice cream. All the while, the siren is blaring so loud that it hurts my ears. I wish we would get a quieter siren.
