The Fireman Essay, Part 7: Climax

Now I find myself in the middle of a catastrophe. I am trapped in a burning house underneath some wreckage. What happened is that I dashed into the building swinging my fire ax; then, all of a sudden, I heard a noise like the crashing of cymbals, and, the next thing I knew, I was buried under this avalanche of debris. Now I’m really in a fix. For the house is on fire, and all this rubble has fallen upon me. Moreover, I now notice that my fire ax is lying in the flames just beyond my reach, and its handle is broken.

So, here I am, under all these ruins, and my fire suit is torn. Plus there is an uncomfortable sore on my lip. So I scream for help, thinking that I am on the verge of death. Then I start to weep.

However, behold: now I hear a sound like the bark of a companion; and, when I look up, I see that my Firedog is here to help!
