How Come Authors Always Look Angry in Photographs?

Why do authors always appear to be scowling in photos? Go out and purchase any book; now flip it around and look at its back cover: see the author’s photo? Why does the guy look as if someone just insulted him? His eyes are squinting, and his brow is lowered. He looks like a villain from an old black-&-white film, ready to shoot up the place. This goes for all authors — let’s check out another: Yes, this one is angry too, in her author’s photo. Let’s ask her why. . . . Now she responds: “I don’t smile because to do so would be silly.” OK, that’s her opinion. But here’s mine:

I think that authors should always smile. Have a good time! Smiling helps to brighten up your day. Allowing yourself to look cheerful in your author’s photo does not insinuate that you are a clown or a courtesan. And smiling isn’t hard to do. Moreover, scientific studies have shown that smiling is good for your overall health. I don’t care if you were born during the U.S. Depression Era, or if you lived thru the Catholic Inquisition — your past should have no bearing on whether or not you smile for photos. In fact, perhaps this horrible new fad of classic authors hunting down and murdering each other would fade away if they all just softened up for the camera.
