It is true that I compose a lot of essays; and, when I deliver these addresses in public, I act as impassioned as an ape. Why do I spend so much time and energy on this pursuit? I’m so involved with my speechmaking that I’ve practically lost touch with the actual world — I have no idea what important events might be happening; I can’t even name our current president. My life is yielded up as a sacrifice to the art of lecturing. I lack any stable residence; I have neither family nor friends. The place where I used to work terminated my employment because I spent more time giving speeches than doing my job. And I had a girlfriend briefly; but she left me one night, when she caught me writing my “Essay on Lovemaking” while we were supposed to be lovemaking.
