I returned home the other day and was shocked to find my roommate’s girlfriend and her mother hanging a decoration from the ceiling of our powder room. “What’s that?” I said. “It’s a gift from my mom,” said my roommate’s girlfriend. And her mom blushed and smiled.
The decoration is a wooden ornament that has strings and jars on it. I immediately sat down and began to compose this thank-you note.
Seriously, I cannot tell you how much I appreciate the decoration that you and your daughter hung in our powder room, Mrs. Menkin. You centered it perfectly on its hook. It makes me happy whenever I notice it — honestly, it almost makes me feel like humming or singing. Plus, now we can get rid of that old poster of Al Gore that we had tacked up there.
