I am standing at the lectern addressing you, my audience. What is the subject of my speech? I’m trying to convince you that I am a good essayist. When none of you believe me, I am devastated. So I go home and note down the names of every person in my audience, since you all have let me down. I then use these names to compose my final letter, in which I say goodbye to the world.
Now my dead body is discovered by a team of reporters. They read my note into their dictation machines; thus, when the news is broadcast, everyone hears the names of all the people in my audience who were the cause of my death. — All of you folks who attended this lecture are now terrified at the consequence of your behavior. You begin weeping and blaming yourselves for this outcome. — Then, eventually, time moves on, and everyone begins to talk about something else.
